Rummy is the term used to describe a certain family of card games. The most popular and well known probably being Gin Rummy which was developed in New York in the early 20th century. They are all variations of the same game and generally involve each player drawing and discarding a card during a turn whilst matching (known as 'melding') their hand of cards.
Modern day rummy is know to have derived from a game called Conquian which began somewhere around the South West of America or Mexico, this in turn may have been derived from a card game prevalent in China in the 18th century, a game similar to Mah Jong.
